In 1919, at the end of the First World War, the leaders of the victorious powers met near Paris to create a peace treaty.
They wanted a treaty to ensure that there would never again be a world war on that scale.
Part of their treaty was the League of Nations – an international organisation which was intended to help keep the peace. It set out to solve international disputes and improve people’s lives, to remove the causes of war. Although it had several successes, it did not prevent the Second World War.
Undeterred, the leaders of the victorious powers in the Second World War tried again in 1945. They created the United
Nations, with exactly the same aims as the League.
